Kamas Utah’s History
The town’s name was derived from camassia quamash, which was a source of food for Native Americans. The area was inhabited by several Native American groups including the Ute, Shoshone, and Snake tribes. Located in Summit County, at an elevation of 6486 ft, Kamas’ main industries are cattle ranching and lumber. To outsiders, it is known as the “Gateway To The Uintas”. The Unitas is an east-west mountain range known for being the highest range in the contiguous United States running that direction. Within the Kamas Valley are the towns of Oakley, Marion, Francis, Peoa, and Woodland.
