The Founding Of Heber City
Originally discovered by Native Americans, the area was used as a summer hunting area. In 1857, sawmill workers hiked the summit of the Wasatch Range to view a high mountain valley. They reported this area to be a paradise land. Word spread fast. By 1858 cattle ranchers established ranches in the south end of the valley. In 1859, settlers (mostly LDS converts from Great Britain) built Fort Heber for protection against the Native Americans. Settlements continued to grow and by 1889, Heber City incorporated as a township. Farming played a large role in the development as the land is rich and fertile. Today, Heber is a bedroom community for SLC. Known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, it is a 4 season oasis for adventurers. The Provo River winds its way through town and is a favorite for anglers. Majestic Mount Timpanogos borders the valley to the west.
